Sustainable Partnerships: 4 Key Questions to Ask Your Fabric Supplier About Eco-Practices

As a fabric supplier, we’re aware of the environmental impacts of fabric production, like large carbon footprints and excessive waste. It’s our duty to make our processes eco-friendly and reduce harm to our planet. Not all suppliers have embraced sustainability, so today, we’ll share four key questions to help you ensure your fabric supplier is committed to sustainable practices. By choosing sustainable suppliers, you contribute to our planet’s health.

  1. Certification: Do your fabrics have eco-certifications?

The most trusted certification systems are Bluesign, REPREVE®, Global Recycled Standard, OEKO-TEX, and the Higg Index. They check a supplier’s environmental and social practices and ensure transparency, accountability, and a commitment to sustainability in the textile industry.

  1. Recycled Materials: Do you provide recycled fabrics?

The fashion industry increasingly opts for recycled materials over traditional ones like polyester, cotton, and nylon. The rising demand for eco-friendly textiles drives this shift. Fabric suppliers play a crucial role by offering a variety of recycled textiles, helping brands stay eco-conscious and competitive. It’s essential to ask suppliers about the percentage of materials like polyester and nylon are sourced from recycled materials.

  1. Waste Management: How do you manage waste?

For example, ask your supplier if they reduce paper and water waste, recycle fabric scraps, or support research into new fabric-recycling technologies. Understanding these initiatives can help you assess how seriously they take their environmental responsibilities.

  1. Energy Waste: How do you manage your energy waste?

It might include utilizing green energy sources such as solar or wind power, reducing reliance on coal, or employing carbon capture to reduce emissions at production facilities and complement renewable energy.
