This award was given to John by Catholic Charities’ Executive Director, Richard Birkel, and Molly O’Donnell, Director of Save First Financial Wellness at the annual Donor Recognition Luncheon on Nov. 28, 2018.
Catholic Charities’ annual Single Candle Award honors and celebrates champions of the organization. Catholic Charities’ mission is to work with the most vulnerable to achieve lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. This honor showcases the dedication of the recipient to continually advance the mission of Catholic Charities in a significant way.
Charitable Efforts
John was selected for his instrumental role in the expansion of Catholic Charities’ financial empowerment program, Save First Financial Wellness. John’s involvement with Catholic Charities began in the 90s when he served on the Board of Directors. In recent years, after coming for a tour of Catholic Charities and learning about Save First, John agreed to provide weekly coaching sessions with Molly O’Donnell, the Director of Save First.
Within months, John had helped Molly forge a path forward alongside other key partners to create a vision for expansion with a new business plan designed. Through their efforts, Save First now successfully provides employees of partner companies and people served by community partners the resources to create a healthy financial lifestyle. Through coaching, workshops, educational materials, and more, these resources empower individuals to get their finances in order. Within five years, Safe First will become a sustainable social enterprise and will expand its life-changing services to 5,000 vulnerable Oregonians.
